Alagappa University was established in 1992 , now known as Alagappa University Distance Education , DDE. Alagappa University Distance Education accredited with 'A' Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is located at Karaikudi.Alagappa University Directorate of Distance Education - DDE is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India.It is the life of a special act of the Government of Tamil Nadu in May 1985 for the Promotion of Applied Research, development and dissemination of knowledge in different areas of life. Alagappa University Distance Education - DDE has 28 affiliated colleges located in Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts are part of the University.

Alagappa University distance education offers UG Courses and PG Courses in the disciplines of Management, Computer Applications, Science, Education and Languages.
